Gurman: Apple Is Developing On-Device Learning Modules for AI Features

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is working on an on-device large language model (LLM) that prioritizes privacy and performance.

Gurman stated in his "Power On" email that forthcoming generative AI features are supported by Apple's LLM. It appears that "all indications" point to it operating exclusively on-device rather than through the cloud, as do the majority of AI systems already in use.

Apple's AI tools could not always be as powerful as those of its direct cloud-based competitors because they would run on-device, but Gurman proposed that the business might "fill in the gaps" by licensing technology from Google and other AI service providers. Gurman revealed last month that Apple and Google were in talks for the iPhone to use iOS 18's Gemini AI engine. When opposed to cloud-based solutions, the primary benefits of on-device processing will be faster response times and increased privacy.

Apple appears to be focusing more on the practical applications of its AI technology than on showcasing its raw capability when it comes to people' everyday lives. Previews of Apple's significant software changes are anticipated to be unveiled at WWDC in June, along with the company's larger AI plan.
